MANAGEMENT UPDATE.

EVERY STATE (NEARLY) IS NUMBER ONE (IN SOMETHING)

It’s the time of the year when governors are delivering their State of the State addresses. Back in 2017, we took note of the propensity of these leaders to proclaim in no uncertain terms that their states were “number one” in one way or another. We put together a brief video about that phenomenon at the time, which you can find here.

Well, this “best in the country,” wording is as popular as ever. Here are samples from a majority of the State of the State speeches that have been delivered so far this year:

“We are the least regulated state. We are one of the safest states in the union. We rank first for income growth. We have delivered more tax relief per capita than any other state.” – Governor Brad Little, Idaho:

“Our state has attracted $32 billion in foreign investment – more than California, Texas or any other state in the nation.” – Governor Katie Hobbs, Arizona:

“We have set the standard for limited government: Florida has the fewest state employees per capita and the lowest state government cost per capita.” – Governor Ron DeSantis, Florida.

“Our Health First Indiana program is the nation’s most substantial new commitment to public health and will further empower Indiana counties to create tailored actions,” – Governor Eric Holcomb, Indiana.

“Last year, Kansas attracted more business investment per capita than any other state in the country. This year, Kansas is #1 – again.” – Governor Laura Kelly, Kansas.

Kentucky’s workforce is second to none.” – Governor Andy Beshear, Kentucky

“Recently, CNBC named New Jersey as the most-improved state in America for business.” – Governor Phil Murphy, New Jersey

“Every year, we’re ranked either #1 or #2 for the most hunting licenses per-capita.” – Governor Kristi Noem, South Dakota

“This Legislature has created one of the most generous college financial aid programs in the country.” – Governor Jay Inslee, Washington

(Note: The National Association of State Budget Officers keeps track of when State of the State addresses are delivered and provides links to videos and transcripts when available.)
