In the late 1970s, Pillen was defensive back for the Nebraska Cornhuskers football team. He was inducted into the Nebraska Football Hall of Fame in 2004. He is the only new governor who is older than the one who preceeded him. He has been a practicing veterinarian, livestock producer and the chair of Pillen Family Farms.
